The cheapest traffic you will ever buy is what you already have
Conversion Rate Optimization is the structured practice of increasing the proportion of visitors who complete a desired action, using research and controlled testing rather than opinion, so that existing traffic produces more revenue without more spend.
Why this matters
Doubling traffic is expensive. Doubling the conversion rate is usually cheaper, faster and compounds with every channel at once, because every visitor from every source hits the same funnel. Yet CRO is normally the last thing a business invests in and the first thing cut.
The reason it gets skipped is that it looks like guesswork, and done badly it is. Changing a button colour because someone read a blog post is not CRO. The discipline is research first: session recordings, form analytics, exit surveys and sales-call transcripts to find where and why people stop, then a test designed to answer one question with enough traffic to reach significance.
On lower-traffic sites, where a valid A/B test would take months, we say so and work from qualitative research and best-practice rebuilds instead of pretending an underpowered test proved something.
Problems this solves
- Plenty of traffic, not enough enquiries
- A form that people start and abandon
- No idea why visitors leave
- Tests that never reach a conclusion
What CRO includes
- 01
Funnel teardown
- Every step from landing to enquiry measured, with the drop-off quantified so effort goes where the loss is largest.
- 02
Qualitative research
- Session recordings, heatmaps, form field analytics, exit-intent surveys and sales-call listening. The hypothesis comes from evidence, not from a checklist.
- 03
Test programme
- A/B and multivariate tests with the sample size calculated in advance, one variable per test, results logged whether they win or lose.
- 04
Landing page systems
- Templates built for campaign traffic, with the speed and mobile behaviour that paid clicks are actually judged on.
- 05
Form and checkout repair
- Field reduction, validation behaviour, error messaging and mobile input handling. Forms leak more than any other single element.
How we run it
-
Measure
Instrument the funnel properly. Most sites cannot yet see where they lose people.
-
Research
Recordings, surveys and sales input to build hypotheses grounded in evidence.
-
Prioritise
Ranked by expected impact against effort, not by whoever argued loudest.
-
Test and document
One question per test, powered correctly, every result written down including the failures.
What you end up with
- A funnel you can see, step by step
- More enquiries from the traffic you already pay for
- Decisions backed by evidence rather than preference
- A documented record of what works on your audience
Common questions about conversion rate optimization
How much traffic do we need for A/B testing?
Enough conversions, not enough visitors. As a rough guide, a few hundred conversions per variant per month makes testing viable. Below that a test would run for months before it meant anything, and we will tell you to invest in qualitative research and a straight rebuild instead.
What conversion rate should we expect?
There is no universal number worth quoting, and any agency giving you one is guessing at your category, traffic mix and price point. The only meaningful benchmark is your own current rate, which is why we measure it before agreeing a target.
How is this different from SXO?
SXO starts at the search result and asks whether the right visitor is landing on the right page. CRO starts once they are on it. They overlap deliberately, and where both are in scope we run them as one programme.
