SXO: the half of search that happens after the click

Search Experience Optimization is the discipline of working backwards from a search result to the page behind it, so that the page matches the intent of the query it ranks for. It sits between SEO, which earns the click, and CRO, which converts the visitor.

Why this matters

A page can rank in the top three and still be the wrong answer. Someone searching a comparison query lands on a product page. Someone ready to buy lands on a 2,000-word explainer. The ranking looks like a win in the report and the revenue never moves.

This is page-type mismatch, and it is the most common reason a well-optimised site underperforms. Diagnosing it means reading the SERP as evidence: if the ten results Google already serves are all comparison tables, Google has told you what it believes the intent is, and a blog post will not compete no matter how well it is written.

SXO works from that evidence backwards. We classify the intent behind each target query, check whether your page type can satisfy it, then rebuild the page around the answer the searcher came for rather than the keyword we want to rank for.

Problems this solves

  • Rankings improved but enquiries did not
  • High impressions, poor click-through rate from search
  • Visitors landing and bouncing within seconds
  • Blog traffic that never touches a commercial page

What SXO includes

01

SERP-backwards analysis

For each target query we classify what Google is already rewarding: page type, format, depth and angle. That is the specification the page has to meet.
02

Intent mapping

Every query classified as informational, commercial, transactional or navigational, then matched to the page type that can serve it. Mismatches are the fix list.
03

Snippet and title optimisation

Titles and descriptions written for click-through against the actual competing results, not in isolation.
04

Post-click experience repair

Above-the-fold answer, readability, internal paths to the commercial page, and speed on the devices your traffic actually uses.
05

Organic conversion tracking

Conversion measured by landing page and by query group, so you can see which rankings earn and which merely exist.

How we run it

  1. Query inventory

Pull every query the site earns impressions for from Search Console, grouped by intent.

  2. Mismatch audit

Compare your page type against what the SERP rewards. The gaps are ranked by commercial value.

  3. Rebuild

Pages restructured or replaced so the format matches the intent.

  4. Measure

Click-through and organic conversion tracked per query group, not site-wide.

What you end up with

  • Pages that match what the searcher actually wanted
  • Higher click-through from the same rankings
  • Organic traffic that reaches a commercial page
  • Reporting that separates rankings that earn from rankings that do not

Common questions about search experience optimization

What is the difference between SXO and CRO?

CRO optimises a page for whoever lands on it, whatever brought them there. SXO starts one step earlier, at the search result, and asks whether the right people are landing on the right page at all. A page can have an excellent conversion rate and still be the wrong page for the query it ranks for.

Do we need SXO if our SEO is already working?

If rankings are up and revenue is flat, that gap is exactly what SXO addresses. If both are moving together, your page types already match intent and the budget is better spent elsewhere. We will tell you which of the two you are in during the audit.

How do you know what intent Google assigns to a query?

By reading the results it already serves. The page types occupying the top ten are Google's own answer, refined over billions of interactions. If every result is a comparison table, that is the format the query demands, regardless of what a keyword tool labels it.
